세계 미술계 VIP 들 광주로, 광주로…

제8회 광주비엔날레, 아트광주에 600여명 참관

광주아트페어와 광주비엔날레가 거의 동시에 개막함에 따라 벌써부터 광주가 세계 예술계의 명사들로 북적대고 있다. 이번에 광주를 찾거나 찾을 예정인 세계적 명사들은 과거 광주에 들른 적이 없는 거물급 컬렉터와 작가, 큐레이터, 그리고 세계 유수 미술관 운영자들이라는 점에서 광주비엔날레가 세계 정상급 비엔날레에 진입하였다는 평가가 나오고 있다.

먼저 9월1일 개막하는 아트광주에는 바젤 마이애미 아트페어의 실질적 창시자이자 미국의 5대 컬렉터로 알려진 도널드 루벨 부부를 비롯하여 중국 현대미술을 세계미술계에 처음 소개한 것으로 알려진 스위스의 컬렉터 울리 직(Uli Sigg)이 광주에 체류 중이다. 이들은 9월 2일과 3일 이틀에 걸쳐 김대중컨벤션센터에서 열리는 아트광주 대담 프로그램에 참가하여 강의를 할 예정이다.

또 다른 명사로는 중국 민생은행재단의 위원장이자 현대미술품 컬렉터인 허주싱, 대만의 타이페이 아트페어 설립자이자 컬렉터인 루디 쳉이 광주에 입성해 있다. 이탈리아 아르테포베라 운동의 대표적 작가인 미켈란젤로 피스톨레토도 아트광주의 플랫폼 프로젝트에 참가하기 위하여 광주를 방문 중이다. 피스톨레토는 이번 아트페어의 특별전인 '플랫폼 프로젝트'에 작품을 출품한다.

피스톨레토의 작품은 정치, 사회적으로 큰 이슈가 되고 있는 동해를 주제로 작품을 한다. 동해는 최근 북한이 미사일 실험을 하거나 독도를 둘러싸고 한․일간의 영토분쟁이 일어나는 등 첨예한 이슈가 상존하고 있는 장소이다. 그는 거울을 동해의 형태대로 잘라내어 모습을 만들고, 전시장에 6명의 관계국 전문가나 예술가를 초청하여 현장에서 실재로 좌담회를 개최한다. 이번에는 중국의 작가 아이 웨이웨이와 일본 오사카미술관의 타데하타 아키라 관장, 모스크바 비엔날레의 조셉 박슈타인 감독, 미국의 큐레이터 오퀴 엔위저, 이탈리아 큐레이터 마누엘라 발디를 현장에 초청한다.

그 밖에 세계적 주요 화랑들로는 뉴욕 래리 가고시언 화랑, 런던의 화이트 큐브 화랑, 런던의 하우스 앤드 워드 화랑 디렉터들이 광주에 모여 참여 작가 300명을 위한 파티를 9월2일에 개최한다. 

광주비엔날레에 맞춰 오는 명사들은 그 수가 300명을 넘는다. 이 가운데는 뉴욕 뉴 뮤지엄의 이사회 이사 40여명이 포함된다. 이 가운데는 다키스 조아누 같은 거물 컬렉터가 포함되어 있다. 다키스 조아누는 그의 소장품만 갖고 미술관 전시가 만들어질 정도로 유명한 소장가이다. 그리고 테디베어 프로젝트 소장가인 이데사 헨델레스를 비롯하여, 제약회사 머크의 대표인 컬렉터 마야 호프만도 광주에 와 있다.

특히 미술관 관장만 30여명이 내광 해 있는 상태. 이 가운데는 테이트 모던의 비센테 토돌리 관장을 비롯하여 취리히 쿤스트할레의 베아트릭스 루프 관장, 오사카미술관의 타데하타 아키라 관장, 뉴욕 현대미술관의 캐시 할브라이시 부관장, 프랑스 리용의 리용현대미술관 티에리 라스파이 관장, 미국 MIT대학미술관의 제인 파버 관장, 뉴뮤지엄 리자 필립스 관장, 동경사진미술관의 오카무라 케이코 관장, 전 베니스비엔날레 총감독을 역임하였으며 현재 토리노의 레바우뎅고 재단의 관장인 프란체스코 보나미 등이 있다.

특히 비엔날레 관계자로는 내년 베니스비엔날레의 비스 큐리거 총감독과 이스탄불비엔날레 비게 외레르 총감독과 큐레이터인 옌스 호프만, 안토니오 페드로사, 휘트니비엔날레 프란체스코 보나미 감독, 뉴올리언즈 비엔날레 댄 카메론 감독, 류블랴나판화비엔날레 릴리야나 스테판치치 감독, 카셀도큐멘타 캐롤린 크리스토프 바카기예프 감독, 싱가포르 비엔날레의 트레보 스미스 감독 등 세계 주요비엔날레의 주요 감독들이 총 출동한다.

그리고 컬럼비아대학 미술대학의 캐롤 베커 학장을 비롯하여 암스텔담의 데 아펠 미술대학의 보스 리케 학장 등 학계에서도 다수 참가한다. 그리고 세계비엔날레 재단의 마리케 반 할 이사장이 광주를 방문하여 세계비엔날레 재단의 이사회를 개최할 계획으로 있어 명실공히 광주가 비엔날레와 아트페어 도시로 급부상하고 있음을 실감하게 한다.

아트페어와 비엔날레에 참가를 위해 현장을 찾은 작가들은 미국의 신디 셔먼을 비롯하여 폴 매카시, 프랑스 누벨바그의 창시자인 장뤽 고다르 감독, 이태리의 마우리치오 카텔란, 영국의 사라 모리스, 중국의 황용핑, 대만의 시더창 등 70명이다.

그리고 개막식에 등록한 언론들은 프랑크푸르트 알게마이네, 르 몽드, 아사히 신문, 이태리의 라 레푸불리카, 스페인의 엘 파이스, 미술잡지들은 아트포럼, 아트인 아메리카, 아트 네트, 플래시아트, 무스, 텍스트 주르 쿤스트 등 해외언론은 모두 60여개이다.

V Edition – International Arte Laguna Prize

The International Prize "Arte Laguna" starts the new edition with the goal to promote young contemporary art. Remaining consistent to the original purposes of its two creators, Laura Gallon and Beatrice Susa, Arte Laguna Prize continues its course as "incubator of Italian and international young art", with the will to discover new talent, to support emerging artists in promoting their creativity and to develop their careers.

Continuing the path opened in 2006, the Prize, organized by the Cultural Association MoCA and Arte Laguna, highlights the peculiar ability to innovate and renew itself. It gained importance an value in a few years in the contemporary art system and it achieved a great success in the 2009 edition, with 5,500 participants from more than 90 different countries, and almost 5,000 visitors for the main exhibition of the 180 Prize finalists, which was successfully completed in Venice on 31st March. This collective exhibition was the first of a series of events involving most of the finalists in personal and group exhibitions organized by galleries and partners held in Italy and abroad during all the 2010.

The next edition of the Prize is enriched with two new sections - Video Art and Performing Art - which are additional to those established: Painting, Sculpture and Photographic Art.

The final exhibition – which displays the 110 finalists selected by judges – is scheduled in March 2011, involving again the prestigious venue of the Arsenal of Venice.

In particular, the Prize presents three main innovations. The first one is represented by a special prize, the Press award, whose jury is composed of seven journalists from the art field: Daniele Capra, Elisa Delle Noci, Lorella Pagnucco Salvemini, Cristiano Seganfreddo, Chiara Somajni, Gloria Vallese, Maurizio Zuccari. The second one is the Special Prize "Artist in Residence", assigned to the artists choosen between finalist ones and it provides three artist's residencies with the specific intent to promote and encourage the creativity of young artists. Finally, there is the Special Prize "Tina B", in collaboration with the same festival in Prague, dedicated to performance. Moreover the Special Prize "Open Arte Communication" that offers the partecipation to the XIV edition of the International Exhibition of Sculptures and Installations that will take place in Lide of Venice during the Venice International Film Festival.

Surrounding the figure of the main curator of the Prize, the art critic Igor Zanti, the Jury presents new important art professionals for increasing new perspectives in the selection of works: Gianfranco Maraniello - Museum Director MAMbo Bologna; Chiara Barbieri - the Guggenheim Foundation in Venice; Matteo Zauli - Director of the Museum Zauli in Faenza; Luca Panaro - art critic; Ludovico Pratesi - Director Visual Arts Center Pescheria in Pesaro; Rossella Bertolazzi - Director European Institute of Design in Milan; Maja Skerbot - art critic and curator; Valentina Tanni – art critic and one of the founders of Exibart; Andrea Lissoni - Claudio Buziol Foundation; Monika Burian - Director of the International Festival of Contemporary Art Tina B in Prague.

Also for its fifth edition, the Prize offers Special Prizes in collaboration with the Galleries Partners, a network of more than 30 Italian and foreign galleries, that host personal exhibitions for the selected artists among the finalist ones.

Moreover the Prize can start new and unexpected synergies between the contemporary art world and the companies through the Special Prize "Business for Art". In this new edition it will start a new collaboration with RE-IL enterprise, in the real estate field, that offers the Special Prize "Reil for young talents", a stay in Brazil for one artist that will work in a resort for making it an unique artistic space.

PinchukArtCentre announced the shortlist
of the Future Generation Art Prize 2010

PinchukArtCentre today announced 21 young artists nominated for the Future Generation Art Prize 2010. The Future Generation Art Prize established by the Victor Pinchuk Foundation is a major new international competition for artists up to 35 to discover and provide long-term support for a generation of emerging artists, wherever they may live and work.

Following the open, free and democratic application procedure via Internet, the 7 members of the Selection Committee, competent and global art-professionals, selected 20 artists from more than 6,000 applications from 125 countries and divided over all continents.

The 21st nominee for the Future Generation Art Prize is Artem Volokytin, the winner of the first PinchukArtCentre Prize 2009, a contemporary art prize awarded to young Ukrainian artists under 35.

The shortlist of the Future Generation Art Prize 2010 includes:

The nominees for the Prize represent 18 different countries. In terms of the continents and world regions 10 artists represent Europe; South America – 3; Middle East – 2; Africa – 1 and Asia – 1. There are 13 male participants and 8 female in the shortlist.

The exhibition of shortlisted artists will open at the PinchukArtCentre in October 29, 2010. The respected international jury will choose and announce the winner of the main prize who will receive a generous prize ($60,000 in cash and $40,000 toward production of new work) at the Award Ceremony on December 10, 2010 in Kiev (Ukraine).

An additional $20,000 from the Foundation will be allotted to fund artist-in-residency programs for up to five other special prize winners. Images of works by all the shortlisted artists will be posted on the website, and members of the public will be invited to vote via the Internet for People’s Choice Prize.

'People meet in architecture' directed by Kazuyo Sejima

Do Ho Suh and Suh Architects are pleased to announce their joint collaboration 'Blueprint' in the 12th International Architecture Exhibition for the Venice Biennale. Invited by Kazuyo Sejima to participate in the main exhibition for the 2010 Venice Architecture Biennale "Blueprint' will be exhibited in the Palazzo delle Esposizioni della Biennale. 'Blueprint' is a dialogue between an artist's home, twice-removed, and its past, present, and future silhouette. This dialogue began with two brothers, Do Ho and Eulho Suh (Suh Architects), exploring their notions of home. Beginning with artist Do Ho Suh's current New York address, the collaboration with Suh Architects re-envisions the Hanok in which they grew up together as it arrives in Venice, Italy.

Do Ho Suh's work is a full-scale (1:1 scale) 12.7 meter tall, hand-stitched, translucent fabric facade of the New York townhouse where he presently resides. As part of a series of works recreating the buildings in which he has lived, the artist continues to explore the notion of home in a nomadic, global society. If suspended vertically, the viewer is invited to enter this dream-like drapery building through an entry on the ground floor. Beyond the entry, the viewer then finds himself standing on what appears to be the building's shadow. If suspended horizontally, the townhouse hovers above the viewer, an ephemeral blueprint floating in from New York.

From this cobalt blue 'ceiling', a front stair extends down to the floor where SuhArchitects' 'reflection' begins. This full-scale floor installation is comprised of CNC routed High Pressure Laminate panels upon which viewers are able to walk. The image is a compilation of a section of the artist's original Korean home, his present New York home's facade, and a typical Venetian villa's facade. These three building facades do not merely overlap; they adopt characteristics of one another to emerge as a new composite shadow that reflects three different homes at once.

Thus, by creating a hard, physical imagined 'shadow' that is a reflection of a soft, ephemeral architectural facade, this collaboration questions the boundary between 'real' and reflection, between art and architecture, between where one once was, now is, and soon will be.

About the Collaborators
Do Ho Suh
Do Ho Suh, born in Seoul, Korea in 1962, lives and works in New York and London. He received an BFA and an MFA in Oriental Painting at Seoul National University before going on to pursue a BFA in painting from RISD and a MFA in sculpture from Yale. He has since had solo exhibitions at the Serpentine Gallery, Seattle Art Museum, the Whitney Museum of Art at Phillip Morris, and the Artsonje Center. Interested in the malleability of space in both its physical and metaphorical manifestations, Do Ho Suh constructs site-specific installations that question the boundaries of personal space and identity. His work explores the relation between individuality, collectivity, and anonymity.

Eulho Suh (Suh Architects)
Eulho Suh is the principal and founder of Suh Architects. Receiving his Bachelor of Architecture from RISD and his post-professional degree from the Harvard Graduate School of Design, Suh has practiced extensively in both conceptual and commercial work. During his time at Morphosis Architects and KPF he actualized numerous design competitions and commercial projects. After establishing Suh Architects in 2006, he has completed a range of commercial, recreational, and residential projects, while also serving as consultant for various companies wishing to re-envision their corporate identities and retail facilities.

KyungEn Kim (Suh Architects)
Currently a design principal at Suh Architects, KyungEn Kim arrived at architecture via sculpture. After receiving her undergraduate degree at Wellesley College, she went on to pursue a Masters of Fine Art in Sculpture from RISD. As her installation work began to define inhabitable spaces, she went on to receive her Masters in Architecture from the Harvard Graduate School of Design. In addition to various installation and architectural projects, she currently consults for a children's apparel company and teaches architecture at Yonsei University.

재단법인 양현(이사장 최은영)은 7일 2010 양현미술상 수상자를 공식 발표했다. 심사위원인 루드비히 미술관(Ludwig Museum) 관장 카스퍼 쾨니히(Kasper König)와 뉴욕현대미술관(Museum of Modern Art) 부관장 캐시 할브라이시(Kathy Halbreich)는 한국인 최초 수상자로 설치미술가 이주요(39)를 선정하였다.

 

이주요는 사진과 드로잉, 독특한 만들기 방식의 작업을 보여주는 작가이다. 비정형적 설치 방식과 아트 북을 통하여 작품을 소개하였으며, 불확실성과 연약함 등을 어눌하고 유쾌한 방식으로 재현하는 것으로 유명하다. 베니스 비엔날레 한국관, 이스탄불 비엔날레, 광주비엔날레 등에 참여하였으며 네덜란드의 드 아펠(De Appel)과 반아베뮤지엄, 일본 오페라시티, 미국 레드캣(REDCAT) 등에서 전시하였다.

 

양현미술상 시상식 및 렉쳐는 오는 10월 8일 서울역사박물관에서 개최 될 예정이며, 7월 23일부터 27일, 10월 7일부터 15일 두 차례에 걸쳐 작가의 스튜디오가 일반인에게 공개 된다.

 

기존의 시상식 당일 수상자를 발표하는 것과 달리, 올해는 수상 작가의 오픈 스튜디오를 공개하여 관람객들과 호흡하는 기회를 마련하기 위하여 양현미술상 수상자 공식 발표 일정을 앞당기게 되었다.

 

전시 형식으로 진행될 오픈 스튜디오는 삶 속에서 미적, 의미적 선택을 해 나가는 일련의 과정을 통해 한 예술가가 지내온 시간의 기록과 행위의 결과물들을 관객이 함께 경험할 수 있도록 마련되었다. 이태원에 위치한 스튜디오는 작가가 최근 2년간 거주하며 작업한 공간이다.

 

이주요는 주어진 조건을 자신만의 방식으로 변화시키고 적응해가는 일련의 과정 속에서 주변에서 흔히 볼 수 있는 사물들을 미술의 소재로 사용한다. 이번 오픈 스튜디오는 작가의 필요에 의해 만들어진 오브제의 탄생과 그 장소에서 시간이 흐르면서 변화 및 변용되는 작품을 가장 잘 보여주는 전시가 될 예정이다.
